Role purpose
The Full Stack IT Consultant will be responsible for the development, maintenance, optimisation and technical management of the company's e-commerce website and associated IT systems. The role will support the continued development of the company's online retail operations by ensuring that its customer-facing website, back-end systems, databases and technical integrations operate securely, efficiently and reliably.
The postholder will work across both front-end and back-end technologies, identify opportunities for technical improvement, develop and implement appropriate solutions, troubleshoot system issues and advise management on the effective use of technology to support the company's e-commerce operations and future growth.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Develop, maintain and enhance the company's e-commerce website and associated web-based applications, ensuring that they remain reliable, responsive, secure and suitable for the operational requirements of the business.
- Design and implement front-end website functionality using appropriate technologies such as HTML, CSS, JavaScript and relevant frameworks, ensuring effective functionality across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.
- Develop and maintain server-side functionality, application logic and database-driven features required to support the company's online retail operations.
- Review the existing website architecture and codebase and implement technical improvements to enhance website performance, usability, scalability and maintainability.
- Develop, configure and maintain integrations between the e-commerce website and relevant third-party systems, including payment services, delivery and shipping solutions, inventory functions and other business applications.
- Maintain and develop product, customer and order-related database functionality and ensure the accurate and efficient exchange of information between different components of the company's e-commerce systems.
- Develop and improve functionality relating to online product catalogues, product categories, product variations, customer accounts, shopping baskets, checkout processes and order-management workflows.
- Monitor website and application performance, investigate technical errors and system failures, identify root causes and implement appropriate corrective solutions.
- Test new website functionality, software developments, integrations and system changes before deployment and resolve defects identified during testing.
- Identify opportunities to automate repetitive technical and administrative processes within the company's e-commerce operations and develop appropriate technical solutions.
- Review the security of the company's website and associated systems and implement appropriate technical measures to reduce vulnerabilities, protect business and customer information and maintain secure system access.
- Carry out routine technical maintenance, software updates, compatibility testing and performance optimisation to maintain the stability and availability of the company's online systems.
- Develop and maintain APIs and other system interfaces where required to facilitate communication and data exchange between internal and third-party applications.
- Analyse technical requirements arising from business needs and translate those requirements into practical system specifications and development solutions.
- Provide technical advice to senior management regarding website architecture, system improvements, software requirements, technology selection and the implementation of new digital solutions.
- Work with management and relevant staff to understand operational requirements and develop technical solutions that improve the efficiency of online sales, stock-related processes, order processing and customer-facing functionality.
- Maintain appropriate technical documentation covering system architecture, software developments, integrations, configuration changes and troubleshooting procedures.
- Manage the deployment of website and application updates and ensure that appropriate testing, version control, backup and recovery procedures are followed.
- Monitor emerging web-development technologies and e-commerce solutions and advise management where new technologies could improve system performance, functionality, security or operational efficiency.
- Liaise with external software, hosting and technology providers where necessary to investigate technical issues and implement system improvements.
- Provide technical guidance and support to internal users in relation to the company's web-based systems and applications.
- Undertake other technical development and IT consultancy duties reasonably associated with the position and the evolving technology requirements of the business.

Qualifications
Essential
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Web Development or a closely related discipline; or
- Equivalent demonstrable professional experience in full-stack software/web development and IT systems.
Technical knowledge and experience
Essential
- Practical experience of full-stack web development, covering both front-end and back-end development.
- Strong knowledge of HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
- Experience with server-side programming and web-application development using appropriate languages, frameworks and technologies.
- Experience of relational databases, database design and SQL.
- Experience developing, maintaining or supporting e-commerce websites or other transactional web applications.
- Understanding of APIs, web services and third-party system integrations.
- Experience diagnosing and resolving website, application and database-related technical issues.
- Knowledge of responsive web development and cross-browser/device compatibility.
- Understanding of web security principles, data protection and secure development practices.
- Experience with version-control systems and structured software-development practices.
- Ability to test, debug and optimise web applications.
- Understanding of website hosting, deployment, backup and recovery arrangements.

- Experience working with established e-commerce platforms and content-management systems.
