The first two weeks: what actually goes wrong when you switch

People who go back to cigarettes often do it inside the first fortnight, and usually for one of four reasons. Here they are, with what to do about each.

A meaningful share of the questions we get come from people in their first fortnight, and the pattern is fairly consistent. Four problems account for most of the people we hear from who give up on vaping and go back to smoking, and none of the four is hard to fix — they are just rarely explained at the point of sale.

None of this is medical advice. It is a summary of what our team hears from customers, and of what tends to help.

1. The nicotine strength is too low

This is by far the most common. Someone smoking twenty a day buys a 10mg salt because 20mg sounded like a lot, then spends the next four days vaping constantly and still feeling like something is missing. That feeling is the withdrawal the device was supposed to be handling.

If you were a pack-a-day smoker, start at 20mg salt in a pod device. You can step down later, and stepping down is easy. Starting too low and white-knuckling it is how people end up back at the corner shop on day nine.

2. The device is wrong for the draw you are used to

Cigarettes are a mouth-to-lung product: you draw into your mouth, then inhale. Most big, cloudy vape devices are direct-to-lung, which feels completely alien if you have smoked for twenty years. People try one, find it uncomfortable, and conclude that vaping is not for them.

For the first month, use a pod system with a tight airflow setting and a 1.0Ω or higher coil. It will feel much more like what you are used to. Cloud chasing, if you ever want it, can wait.

3. Nobody explained priming

A dry hit — that sharp, acrid, back-of-the-throat burn from firing a coil with dry cotton — is genuinely unpleasant, and a lot of people take it as evidence that vaping is unpleasant in general. It is not. It is a five-minute setup step that was skipped.

Put five drops of liquid directly onto each visible wicking port on a new coil. Fill the tank or pod. Then put it down and leave it alone for five full minutes. Every time. This single habit will roughly double your coil life and eliminate almost every burnt taste you would otherwise get.

4. The flavour is a tobacco flavour

It feels intuitive to pick tobacco, and it is very often a mistake. Vape tobacco flavours do not taste like a cigarette — they taste like an approximation of one, and the gap between the two is distracting in a way that a strawberry flavour simply is not. Plenty of people only get on with vaping after abandoning tobacco liquids entirely.

Buy three different flavours in your first order. Fruit, menthol, and one dessert. They are four pounds each. Finding the one you actually enjoy matters more than any hardware decision you will make.

What the second week looks like

Assuming you have got the four above right, week two is usually where it stops feeling like an effort. Cravings become intermittent rather than constant, and most people find their nicotine consumption drifting down without deliberately managing it. That is the point at which stepping the strength down starts to make sense — but not before.

  • Keep the device charged and with you. An empty battery at 3pm is a relapse risk.
  • Buy a second device before you need one. Hardware fails at inconvenient times.
  • Keep spare coils in the house. Running out is a common relapse trigger.
  • Do not step down strength until cravings are genuinely intermittent.
